The Land Rover Freelander has been described as a “lifestyle four-wheel drive” as despite its sleek SUV exterior it has plenty of power beneath the hood. Unlike traditional SUVs, the Freelander is built on a single body structure, resulting in a whisper-like ride quality, with similarities to its cousins: the Land Rover Discovery and Land Rover Range Rover.

Now into its second generation, the Freelander was the first Land Rover to feature Hill Descent Control technology (when it was launched in 1997), which is a gradient release system that works with Traction Control and Anti-Lock Brake systems to guarantee smooth hill-starts moving forward and in reverse. Popular for its technical sophistication, Land Rover’s new Freelander series presents a safe and responsive range of vehicles for those seeking a compact off-road experience.

Now with extra length than its predecessor and with a more generous wheelbase, the current Freelander for sale has a spacious interior, which is accentuated by high-quality materials. Enjoy a range of leather and cloth seating with trim colours in Ebony, Almond and Storm Grey in the Land Rover Freelander 2. Rear-seat headphone sockets, touch screen navigation and a sunroof are additional features that add that extra touch of class.

The Freelander 2 is a versatile saloon car on the road, with exceptionally agile handling and accessible torque across the rev range – ready for off-road adventures. Available with capable diesel and petrol engine alternatives, the Land Rover Freelander 2 is said to have 30 percent more power than its predecessor’s V6 engine, and more than 100-percent improvement in fuel efficiency. Comfortable and classy interiors make way for high-quality upholstery, tufted carpets and space that passengers can really stretch out in.

The new Freelander is available with a 3.2-litre i6 petrol engine, which delivers 171KW of power, and access to 80 percent of the torque range at low revs. The 2.2-litre Turbo Diesel Freelander delivers 118KW on the road, and has an option of six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift adaptive automatic transmission – which provides drivers with clutch-free sequential gear changing. Standard manual transmission in the Freelander diesel has a Stop/Start system which helps to bring the engine to a halt when driving in congested conditions, saving up to 10.7 percent per 100 kilometres of fuel. Adding to this engine’s fuel economy is the common-rail injection system, ensuring that system engine emissions are in keeping with global environmental standards.

Freelanders have upgraded interior features that set them apart from their predecessors. Adjustable leather seats in an elegant tiered seating plan create ample leg, shoulder and head room for five adults. Load space can be expanded by simply folding down the rear seats, particularly if you’re transporting awkward luggage or furniture. The all new Freelander has a large glove box, two cup holders and front and rear-door storage bins that provide easy access to valuables such as wallets, cell phones and keys.

One of the most recognisable Land Rovers on the road, the new Freelander is sleek and streamlined, with wraparound headlights that support its chiselled looks. Available in halogen with polycarbonate lenses or with bi-xenon projector lamps – which shine blue-white in the dark – these headlights adorn the Freelander’s upgraded grilles, making the front-end intake section noticeably sophisticated. It’s in this exterior that the Freelander appeals to a wide range of tastes, from those who prefer sporty saloon cars with metallic finishes to the hallmark Land Rover go-anywhere, do-anything appeal.

Land Rover considered a wide range of road surfaces as well as weather conditions when the company designed the new Freelander. Clearing 210mm above the road and providing a wading depth of 500mm, Freelanders go beyond plush leather interiors and touch screen navigation to take on rocks, gravel, grass, mud, sand and ruts. Well known for its off-road expertise, Land Rover installed an intelligent 4x4 system in the Freelander that ensures a smooth pull away on surfaces that slip, such as sand. The Freelander 2 is responsive on the trail owing to its rack-and-pinion steering, which is adjustable to how you like it. Roll Stability Control and Dynamic Stability Control comprise two of the industry’s most sophisticated anti-roll technologies manufactured in saloon cars to date. When these systems detect the vehicle cornering off-course, these systems apply Anti-Lock Brakes to adjust the vehicle’s course.

More powerful than previous models, the Land Rover Freelander can drive from 0 to 100 kilometres per hour in just over 10 seconds. And yet, Land Rover has installed a variety of standard safety features, including front, side and full-length curtain airbags to protect passengers. Features such as Cornering Brake Control give additional brake force to the outside wheel when cornering, working against the risk of rear-end breakaway. Electronic Traction Control quickly intervenes when wheels are spinning to reduce torque.

The Land Rover Freelander series combines polished road appearances with full four-wheel-drive capabilities, appealing to sporty off-road adventurers, tarmac commuters and all those drivers in-between. Known as the “Baby Land Rover”, the latest Freelander for sale has sophisticated driving technology that makes its ride quality smooth, safe and adaptable to a variety of road surfaces.
